Dr. Abu Hashem received his Ph.D. (with distinction) in nanobiotechnology from the University of Malaya in 2022. Dr. Hashem earned his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2004, he began his career as a scientific officer at the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB). He was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in 2013 and subsequently to Principal Scientific Officer in 2018. He has developed innovative DNA-based electrochemical biosensors for the detection of porcine and box turtles, utilizing an in silico-designed probe with bioinformatics tools and incorporating nanoparticles. The encyclopedia has published a brief version of one of his review articles, titled “Graphene and Carbon-Based Additives.” In addition to these accomplishments, he has developed eco-friendly microbial enzymes for leather hide processing, developed a microbial fuel cell for electricity generation using waste materials, and generated probiotics for human consumption from local sources. He has published approximately 40 journal articles, contributed five book chapters to various renowned publications, and authored 21 conference abstracts related to his research. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to both research and administration, he has received nine awards and distinctions, including five international awards related to his Ph.D. research, as well as a distinction for his Ph.D. thesis. His extensive experience and proven track record in administration and management, including serving as the head of the research division and institutional coordinator for all NIB divisions and branches, have solidified his administrative foundation and prepared him to handle any administrative responsibilities. For his exemplary performance in administrative roles, he received a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ for his outstanding contributions to NIB, a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ for his excellent performance in ADP project implementation, which resulted in substantial government savings, and an ‘Integrity Award’ from NIB under Bangladesh’s national integrity strategy for his dutifulness, honesty, accountability, and transparency.
